How do we stay connected to the people we love after they're gone?

That's the question I spent six months chasing in The Magnificent Maybe — through mediums, neuroscience, fire ceremonies, religion, psychedelics, and grief rituals from around the world. I explored cultural and religious traditions spanning civilizations, examined scientific theories about consciousness, and participated in mystical practices, seeking insight from scientists, clergy, mediums, and leading spiritual thinkers.

And I did it all with a journalist’s mindset, a mother’s tenacity, and a griever’s aching heart.

Advance Praise

  • "Jessica Fein lost her daughter and did the bravest thing a grieving mother can do - she went looking for her, through mediums and neuroscience, fire ceremonies and grieftech. The Magnificent Maybe is the rare grief book that reads like an adventure: skeptical, funny, fiercely honest, and full of hope that our people are never as far away as we think."

Lara Love Hardin, NYT Bestselling author of The Many Lives of Mama Love (Oprah's Book Club)

  • “Fein’s skeptical, witty and deeply compassionate questioning about what happens after death is manna from heaven for those grieving losses—even if we don’t believe in manna or heaven. Her deeply personal and adventurous willingness to research and test-drive every conceivable answer that can be found in science, history, literature, mediums, religion, psychedelics and even AI, truly made me believe what some might consider impossible. The Magnificent Maybe is magnificently human and humane.”

Caroline Leavitt, New York Times bestselling author of Days of Wonder
  • “The Magnificent Maybe is the book I’ve been missing—the one I reach for when I need comfort, and the one I share with anyone longing to enter the sacred mystery that connects us to those who have gone before us.”

Barbara Becker, interfaith minister and author of Heartwood: The Art of Living with the End in Mind
  • "In The Magnificent Maybe, Jessica Fein creates a salve for the grieving heart. Her words left me feeling hopeful, at peace, and perhaps most importantly, connected. I can't wait for this book to help others the way it helped me."

Kelly Cervantes, best-selling author of Normal Broken and The Luckiest
  • “For anyone who has wondered, Is it possible to connect with loved ones who have died?, Jessica Fein explores the question as only she can—with unflinching honesty, enormous heart, and unexpected humor. Whether grieving a profound loss or simply curious about life after death, Jessica Fein is the perfect skeptic to guide us on a quest to connect with the other side. Smart, funny, and steeped in hope, The Magnificent Maybe is a resounding YES!”

Stephanie Sarazin, Author, The Little Book of Loss Rituals: 75 Practices for Grieving, Mourning, and Healing
  • "Tender, witty, and deeply wise, The Magnificent Maybe is a gift to anyone who has loved and lost ,and is still asking, "what comes next?" Jessica Fein doesn’t promise certainty, but I believe she offers something better: permission to stay open, stay connected, and treat ‘maybe’ as a place where hope can live.”

Gina Moffa, LCSW, grief therapist and author of Moving On Doesn’t Mean Letting Go:A Modern Guide to Navigating Loss and What Happened to Our Friendship?

About The Magnificent Maybe

After I lost my daughter Dalia, I went looking for her anywhere she might still be found.

The Magnificent Maybe is the story of the six months I spent chasing one question: How do we stay connected to the people we've lost? I said yes to almost everything — medium sessions, neuroscience research, Mayan fire ceremonies, grieftech, plant medicine, grief rituals from cultures around the world — and I tried to hold onto both my skepticism and my openness the whole way through.

This book weaves investigative reporting with personal memoir. In each chapter, I pair what happened to me with the bigger question behind it: what do we actually know about consciousness, about tradition, about staying close to someone after they're gone. I talked to mediums and psychics as an honest skeptic. I talked to clergy, scientists, and spiritualists who've spent their lives thinking about what lies beyond the veil. And slowly, I found some rituals and approaches that made me change the way I think about the world and what might come next.
